Why Using Self-Luminous Exit Signs Is A Step In The Green Direction!

Everyone’s going greener these days, and that’s a good thing on many different levels. It’s obviously good for the environment, good for public relations, and often good for your bottom line. Let’s see some of the ways that using self-luminous exit signs in your building’s emergency egress planning can be a real healthy step in the green direction!

In order to do so, we need to know what has come before. Prior to the last decade, incandescent lighting or tritium exit signs were used in new construction and retrofitting. These both lit the way (usually), but at a cost. Incandescent lighting is plagued with the necessity to replace bulbs, maintain wiring, check on battery backups, and hope that the whole system works when you actually have a catastrophe!

Tritium exit signs had their own set of problems built in. These exit signs were powered by a radioactive isotope, and as such each and every sign was numbered and kept track of by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission-trained handlers in hazmat gear are required for disposal! These exit signs are no longer manufactured in the US because of environmental concerns, and in fact the Federal Energy Management Program has mandated that these be replaced in all federal buildings as soon as possible.

Self-luminous, photoluminescent exit signs use stored ambient light, require no power to run, no batteries as backups, are virtually maintenance-free and are 100% recyclable! They also have a life span of some 25 years, making them a long-term solution. See them in action at GloBriteSystem.com.
