Photoluminescent Safety Signs Offer Energy Efficiency

Making your existing building energy efficient has two main benefits: it dramatically cuts your energy costs and it supports the environment by cutting down on energy production. But in most cases, companies are attracted to energy efficient design for the incredible impact that it can have on their bottom line. Large companies that retrofit their old operating systems with energy efficient designs can easily reduce their annual energy costs by six figures, and sometimes even more. But to achieve such savings, companies usually have to take a holistic approach, leaving no energy inefficient system untouched.

Consequently, some shy away from the initial cost of implementing energy efficient design, even as long-term cost analyses reveal that the cost savings would soon pay for the investment. Sometimes, the decision not to go forward with energy efficient construction is simply a matter of budget. For companies in this position, there are energy efficient options that are inexpensive to implement but that still decrease yearly energy costs in a significant fashion, an example of which can be found in the implementation of photoluminescent safety signs.

Because of their non-toxicity and electricity-free existence, photoluminescent safety signs are the most popular emergency exit signs among environmentalists. But they are also catching on with companies that want to save money and value eco friendliness as an added benefit. Research shows that a traditional incandescent exit sign costs about $1,500 dollars to operate over the course of its lifetime, whereas photoluminescent emergency exit signs cost nothing beyond their purchase price. Over the course of both signs’ lifetime—roughly 25 years—that means that you would end up saving nearly $90,000 if you replaced 100 incandescent signs with photoluminescent signs. Considering that photoluminescent exit signs run between around $100 and $180, depending on design, that’s an ROI that any company should be able to live with.
